How do I terminate a Customs Bond?

To terminate a Customs bond, send a letter on company letterhead to the port where the bond was originally registered. Include in the letter the name of the bond principal, the bond number, bond amount, and a requested effective date for termination. As a general rule, bond terminations requested by a principal can take effect 10 days after the request is received. Sureties requesting termination must send the request to both Customs and the principal by certified mail, return receipt requested, and allow a reasonable period for notiification to occur, usually 30 days after receipt. 19 CFR 113.27 explains the guidelines for requesting an alternative timeline for termination. If you do not know which port to send the letter to, reference the bond number. The first two numbers of the bond represent the first two numbers of the port code for the port that processed the bond. For example, the port code for St. Albans, VT, is 0201. Any bonds processed by the port of St. Albans, VT, would begin with 02. (A link to port codes can be found on the port page of the CBP web site.)
